A tank pumped on a measured interval almost never produces an emergency. The emergencies come from tanks that went nine years because nobody was tracking it, by which point solids have been reaching the bed for a while.
That damage is the one thing on a septic system that does not reverse, which is why the interval is worth more attention than the price of any single visit. Two depth readings are all it takes to replace a guess with a date, under pumping schedule.

What the yearly items are
Filter and inspection, not just pumping
Pumping is on a multi-year cycle. Two other things are yearly and are what actually catch problems early: the effluent filter, pulled and rinsed, and a look at the baffles, the distribution box and the field surface.
That yearly check is where a drifting distribution box or a corroding outlet tee gets found while each is still a small repair. Left alone, both eventually produce the same symptoms as total bed failure, which is set out on failure signs.
The check is cheapest combined with a pump out, because the tank has to be empty for the interior to be seen at all. See annual inspection.
