The cheapest version of this job is to drop a hose in, pull off the liquid, and drive away. The tank looks empty and refills within a day, because the sludge layer that made it due in the first place is still sitting on the bottom.
A full pump out breaks that layer up and draws it off, then washes the walls down so the compacted material in the corners leaves too. That is what resets the clock, and it is why the second depth reading matters as much as the first. Those readings are what set your pumping schedule.
While the tank is empty, the inlet and outlet baffles, the effluent filter and the tank walls are visible for the only time in the cycle, so anything failing gets noted then rather than on a later emergency call. If something is wrong it goes on a separate written price under septic repair.

Four things move a pumping price: tank size, how far the truck has to run hose from where it can park, the disposal fee at the receiving site that month, and whether the lid has to be dug up. All four are on the quote before work starts, and typical ranges for each are set out on septic pumping cost.
What comes back afterwards is the disposal receipt showing where the load went, the two depth readings, and a note on anything that looked close to the end. If the tank turns out to need a new outlet tee or the field is not accepting flow, you get a second written price for that and the pumping invoice still stands on its own.
